We've all heard stories about fisherman up to a little late night funny business. But this plan was really ambitious.
A freighter passing through the English channel on it way to Antwerp dropped 11 water-tight boxes overboard marked with lobster buoys. They contained 255 kilos of high-grade cocaine, worth $50 million pounds (around $100 million).
A lobster boat owned by Jamie Green left the Isle of Wight to pick up the packages and make it look like an innocent run to pick up lobsters. Unfortunately for the smugglers, the Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency (as opposed to Unserious Organized Crime?) was onto the plot, and they were busted when they made landfall on May 30, last year. The five conspirators were convicted last week, according to The Argus, and will do a combined 104 years in prison.
Britain's cops are clearly tickled. One crowed: “Rather than bringing them massive profits, however, their plan has put them in the same unenviable position as many others who have been caught attempting to traffic drugs under the guise of legitimate business.”
